Program of Work: Education
The Education committee of the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce is an active organization that participates and promotes: Partners in Education, "Teacher of the Year" Award, College for Texans Campaign, D.E.A.R. Day, Job Shadowing, and mentoring.
College for Texans,a project of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, is promoted throughout the year by the Education Committee through the distribution of pamphlets and brochures. $4 billion dollars is available every year to help Texans attend college and College for Texans is designed to give Texans everything they need to know about preparing for, applying for, and paying for college or technical school.
D.E.A.R. Day or "Drop Everything And Read Day," is an event that stresses the importance of reading to every Waxahachie ISD student grades pre-K to eighth. Once a year local business owners and citizens become guest readers and read aloud to students for 15 to 20 minutes. Businesses also assist in the purchasing of books for local schools. The purpose of the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce Job Shadowing Program is to allow high school students to gain “hands-on” experience in the field of their choice so they can make educated decisions about their future college majors and career choices. The program runs during the summer months and the internship schedule is decided entirely by the student and employer. For more information on Job Shadowing, email the Membership Director.
